YWCPA Event 2021 scaled e1636126161218 GHWCC | Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce

Recently, the Women Driving Arts Education Committee hosted a highly successful event for students of the Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy to further promote the committee’s goals of bringing the arts and education about the arts to underserved girls. The event—a conversation with Dr. Alvia Wardlaw, Texas Southern University (TSU) Museum Director and Curator and nationally recognized top expert on African American art and history—centered around a discussion about the treasured murals painted by black artists over the years that are on display in Hannah Hall on the TSU campus, vibrant reminders of Houston’s history.
Over 120 students attended the event, many lining up with thoughtful questions for Dr. Wardlaw during the Q&A. Many thanks to Samina Farid for serving as moderator and helping secure Dr. Wardlaw for the event, and to the United Way, who produced a video about the murals and made it available to GHWCC and YWCPA for viewing prior. Fun Fact: we learned that Dr. Wardlaw is a former alum of Miller Middle School, which was housed in the same building YWCPA now calls home!
