Ashley Vignaud Marshall (“AVM”) Hawkins is an American artist, living and working in Houston, Texas. AVM specializes in custom created, large scale abstract contemporary paintings, perfect for curating elegant residential and commercial interiors with awe-inspiring, meaningful art.
AVM is a self-taught artist, who began painting during her 1L Year at Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Art was a creative outlet that provided AVM the opportunity to create with freedom and courage to experiment, explore, make mistakes and try new ideas.
AVM completed her studies and practiced law for six years at the public interest non-profit, The Earl Carl Institute for Legal & Social Policy, Inc. AVM recounts, “Although I achieved many of my goals, such as passing the Texas Bar and practicing in public service, I still felt the calling to pursue art professionally. Art eventually became a prominent desire that I felt I could no longer ignore or pacify solely as a hobby.”
In 2018, after a grueling juried and interview process, AVM was admitted as a Fellow in the prestigious John Ross Palmer’s Escapism Art Mentorship Program, where AVM created, exhibited, and sold her art full-time during evenings and weekends. During this 9 month program, AVM committed herself to learning the business of art, building her confidence as a painter, as well as learning how to build and stretch her own canvases.
Since 2018, AVM has transitioned from being a public interest attorney into being a full-time artist. AVM has exhibited her work at Mid Main Gallery, John Palmer Art Gallery, and Sawyer Yards, as well as original works contained in the private collections of Attorney Lauren Waddell of Waddell Law Firm, Steve (“Franchise”) Francis former NBA Player for the Houston Rockets, Judge Ravi Sandill and Attorney Kelly Spragins Sandill, Judge Lesley Briones and Attorney Adan Briones, and Judge Rabeea Collier and Attorney Robert Collier.
“I pride myself on being versatile and always wanting to create something truly innovative and aesthetically pleasing to the soul. I often feel like I have not yet touched the tip of the iceberg of what I am capable of creating. This excites me, and inspires me to paint compulsively. I want to continue to evolve as an artist, perfect my craft, and explore the wide range of art that I know is inside of me.”
AVM experiments with colors, designs, sketches, textures, collage and gestural movements, to create something that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also invokes an emotion or conveys a positive message interpreted by the viewer. Very similar to sharing a meal, or a smile, art has the ability to connect us in ways that transcend barriers such as language, culture, race, gender, creed and politics. AVM aims to create art that speaks to us on a universal level that connects all of us.AVM’s artwork can be viewed and acquired via appointment at her private studio and showroom and online at AVMHawkins.com.
