Women Continue to Make Gains in Elected Office Nationwide

As of 2026, women hold 150 seats in the U.S. Congress, about 28% of the 535 total, with a record high of 152 reached briefly late in 2025. Women also make up roughly 26% of the U.S. Senate, 28.5% of the House, and 96 statewide elective executives (31% of those offices), including 12 governors; at the state legislative level, women occupy about 33.5% of seats, and roughly 32–34% of municipal offices in cities over 10,000 are held by women, with women mayors holding about 25% of mayoralties in cities over 30,000 and 41% of the largest 100 cities.
