Brownsville native Gina Hinojosa has made history as the first Hispanic woman elected governor of Texas, defeating incumbent Greg Abbott in the November 3, 2026, election and becoming the first Democrat to win the state’s governorship in 36 years. A graduate of Homer Hanna High School and former Texas state representative, Hinojosa is expected to take office in January 2027, while the City of Brownsville plans to honor her historic achievement and South Texas roots with a special proclamation and Key to the City.
