About 8 in 10 women in opposite-sex marriages say they took their husband’s last name

Marriage trends in the United States have evolved significantly over the past few decades, yet the tradition of women adopting their husband’s last name remains prevalent. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, 79% of women in opposite-sex marriages reported taking their spouse’s last name. Meanwhile, 14% chose to retain their maiden name, and 5% opted to hyphenate their last name with their spouse’s.
