Because behind every small business is a story.

One of the greatest benefits of serving as Deputy CEO and President of the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce is having the opportunity to step inside the businesses that make Houston extraordinary. We all know the storefronts. We know the brands. But until you walk through the back doors, meet the people, and witness the operations firsthand, you don’t truly understand what it takes to build a successful business.

That is exactly what I experienced during my recent visit to Dessert Gallery World Headquarters in District K, graciously hosted by owner Sara, a member of the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce’s Founders Institute.

For more than 31 years, Dessert Gallery has been delighting Houstonians with cakes, cookies, pies, and desserts that have become part of countless celebrations. Behind every dessert is an extraordinary team whose stories deserve to be celebrated just as much as the desserts themselves.

As we toured the facility, I met women who have dedicated more than twenty years of their careers to baking cakes. I watched talented cookie artists transform icing into edible works of art—and after trying it myself, I have an entirely new appreciation for their incredible talent.

The tour also revealed the systems behind success: organized inventory, thoughtful production, careful logistics, and the many team members responsible for ensuring every dessert reaches retail locations with the same level of excellence customers have come to expect.

Perhaps what impressed me most was the people. Every person had a role. Every role mattered. From the bakers to the decorators, from packaging to distribution, everyone contributed to delivering an exceptional customer experience.

As Chair of Houston City Council’s Economic Development Committee, I often speak about supporting small businesses. Visits like this remind me why that work matters. Small businesses are the heartbeat of Houston’s economy. They create jobs, mentor future entrepreneurs, strengthen neighborhoods, and invest in our communities.

Thank you, Sara, for opening your doors and allowing us to experience Dessert Gallery from the inside out. Thank you for investing in Houston for more than three decades and for reminding all of us that behind every successful business is a remarkable team, a bold vision, and a story worth sharing.

At the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to celebrate women entrepreneurs because when women-owned businesses thrive, our communities thrive with them.
