Janette Marx
CEO of Airswift
2022 GHWCC Chair of the Board
1. Can you provide a brief overview of your career journey and the path that led you to your current position?
When I was young and needed work, I turned to a staffing firm to help me and said yes to their temporary jobs they offered me. That move of saying yes, changed the direction of my life. They soon hired me direct and I took off in an industry that I quickly fell in love with. I raised through the ranks of recruitment, sales, operations and leadership. I look another leap when I said yes to a promotion that moved me from California to Charlotte, NC. I am now in Houston as the CEO of Airswift and each decision point in my career led me to this outcome. I’m grateful for having the courage to take risks and follow a path not easily seen.
2. Looking back on your career, what are some of the most valuable lessons you have learned?
Build allies in all aspects of business and life. Your allies can sponsor you for promotions, give advice when it’s most needed and share with you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. Real growth comes from building mentors and listening to that advice. Don’t ever be afraid to ask for what you want. If you don’t get it right away, find out what you need to do to earn it!
3. As a leader in the business community, what legacy do you aspire to leave behind?
My legacy should be seen through the people I have mentored along the way. The growth that they have and the path that they choose is all I want to celebrate as they grow and surpass their own dreams.
4. What motivated you to join the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors?
I was looking for an organization that helped women advance their careers in the greater STEM areas. With all the program of work that the GHWCC has, there are so many ways to make an impact and know that you are making a difference in the Houston community. I’m glad I jumped in!
5. Can you describe a specific program or initiative led by the Chamber that has made a significant difference in the lives of women and girls in Houston?
The Thought Leaders Institute is a strong program that combines women from different companies, industries and specializations to come together for a year program to learn from an executive coach and go down a path of self-discovery. I was personally promoted to CEO during my time with my cohort and I know many other women who found their way to promotions, better business relationships and new adventures as a result of this program.
