1. What motivated you to join the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors?
This wasn’t so much a “what” as it was a “who”! I met Leisa Holland-Nelson at an event and she told me about the women’s chamber. She explained that the chamber was a place where women supported each other, personally and professionally. I was skeptical, but from the very first chamber event, I attended, I could see that she was right!

2. In your opinion, what sets the Chamber apart from other organizations?
The Greater Houston Women’s Chamber really celebrates the accomplishments of its members. Through programming, it supports learning, development, and growth of its members in a way I just have not experienced in any other chamber.

3. Can you describe a specific program or initiative led by the Chamber that has made a significant difference in the lives of women and girls in Houston?
For girls, I think the Chamber’s emphasis on at-risk young girls through the STEAM and the Arts initiatives have been incredibly impactful. For professional women, Thought Leaders, and Women on Board have provided incredible levels of support and development for executive women. I have sent a woman leader from my company to Thought Leaders every year for the last 5 years. All of them have found the program valuable.

4. What do you see as the most significant challenges that women and girls face in the business world today, and how does the Chamber address those challenges?
Women are still under-represented at the highest levels in corporate America, including the C suite and the board room. We also have a particularly challenging time acquiring funding for business ventures. Venture capital and private equity has been slow to fund and support female founders and female-lead start ups.

5. In your experience, what are the key benefits that members of the Chamber receive, and how does the organization support their professional and personal growth?
One of the most important benefits of the chamber is the ability to meet and network with other executive women. I have made lifelong and lasting friendships and found “my people” through the chamber.

6. Lastly, can you share a memorable success story of a woman who has been positively impacted by the Chamber’s programs and services, or how the Chamber has personally impacted you?
Well, I think there are a lot of success stories, but I myself joined the chamber when my company was young and virtually unknown. By recognizing our accomplishments through awards, the newsletter, and leadership opportunities at the Chamber, our company really benefitted. Not only did we feel embraced by the supportive community the chamber provided but we experienced outstanding growth as a result of the exposure we gained through chamber events.
