Parrots Take Flight in South Texas Cities

Texas Monthly highlights how the endangered red‑crowned amazon parrot, native to northeastern Mexico, has established thriving feral populations across South Texas, including cities like San Antonio, Houston, and particularly the Rio Grande Valley, following escapes or releases from the pet trade. With an estimated 900 wild individuals roosting around McAllen, Brownsville, Harlingen, and Weslaco, the species has adapted well to urban environments, leveraging ornamental trees and cavities for nesting, and has even earned official recognition as native to Texas.
