DSC 0122 cropped 4 scaled Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of CommerceGHWCC hosted a program for attorneys on September 27, Perspectives from Inside the Company: Hiring Outside Counsel.  The panel of accomplished executives and corporate legal counsel shared insights on what corporate clients look for in hiring outside legal counsel and how attorneys can gain a competitive edge.  The evening included a dynamic panel presentation, a lively Q&A session, and lots of networking.  The panel of impressive and accomplished women included Bethany Borcherding, Senior Vice President & Commercial Lending Manager, Amegy Bank, Afhseen Davis, Vice President & General Counsel, Texas Children’s Hospital, Deborah Gordon, EVP, Chief Administrative Officer & Chief Legal Counsel, Memorial Hermann Health System, Samita Mehta, Senior Counsel for Litigation and Arbitration at ConocoPhillips, and Diane Ralston, Chief Legal Officer & Secretary, Schlumberger.   Panel moderator was Deborah Hatter, Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright US LLP.  The event was co-chaired by Theresa Einhorn, former Partner with the Haynes and Boone, LLP law firm, and Lauren Waddell, Family Law Attorney and Founder, Waddell Law Firm, P.C.

Fun facts about the event venue, the C. Baldwin Hotel: The C. Baldwin Hotel is named in honor of Charlotte Baldwin, the wife and sister-in-law of Houston’s founding Allen Brothers, who famously purchased 6,000 acres in Houston in 1836.  Although it was Charlotte’s money that funded their purchase, in 1836 wives were prohibited from controlling property and thus her name did not appear on the deed.  Charlotte was an accomplished businesswoman, cattle rancher, philanthropist and trailblazer, but she is rarely acknowledged in the history books. The GHWCC proudly played a role in influencing the naming of the C Baldwin Hotel.  When the hotel was opened the owners declared “Today, we honor Charlotte’s tenacity and vision by proudly putting her name on the door.”
