Spotlight on Khori Dastoor – Houston Grand Opera’s General Director and CEO on the company’s exciting season ahead

It has been such an exciting time at Houston Grand Opera! The company’s dynamic General Director and CEO, Khori Dastoor, just completed her first year with the organization, and the upcoming opera season, which launches this October, will be the first to be fully planned under her leadership.

“There is so much to look forward to next season,” says Dastoor. “From composers, to directors, to conductors, to divas—it will be a powerhouse season for women. These operas feature a diverse set of powerful female characters, with immensely talented women portraying them.”

The 2022-23 season will feature seven operas, including a new, company-commissioned mainstage production: Dame Ethel Smyth’s 1906 opera The Wreckers, which represents the first staging of the composer’s forgotten masterpiece by a professional American opera company.

“All of these operas share universal human stories that allow us to access our own deepest emotions,” says Dastoor. “These incredible artworks have something to say to all of us.” And the people presenting the season—both on the Wortham stage and behind the scenes—are at the very top of the field. “True to HGO,” says Dastoor, “these productions will be staged by a diverse and globe-spanning group of the very best artists and creatives in all of opera!”

The HGO team is thrilled to present seven incredible operas next season at the Wortham. Here’s what’s in store:

  • A sultry audience favorite: Verdi’s La Traviata, Oct. 21-Nov. 6, 2022
  • A new production of a rare masterpiece: Smyth’s The Wreckers, Oct. 28-Nov. 11, 2022
  • The return of an HGO commissioned mariachi opera: Javier Martínez and Leonard Foglia’s El Milagro del Recuerdo, Dec. 8-18, 2022
  • A shenanigan-filled comedy: Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Jan. 13-28, 2023
  • A rarely performed tale of obsessive love: Massenet’s Werther, Jan. 27-Feb. 10, 2023
  • One of the world’s favorite operas: Puccini’s Tosca, Apr. 21-May 5, 2023
