Vol. 3 The Trap of “Someday I’ll…”
Parking lifelong dreams in a faraway place

It is easy to think that if we achieve certain things, we will be happy, fulfilled, or successful. We talk about these dreams as if they are our key to happily ever after.  But these achievements and dreams – and the fulfillment that goes with them– constantly outdistance us.

And yet, we all know that tomorrow is not promised to any of us.

I once heard a speaker refer to SOMEDAY ISLE…an island far, far away in a distant place that, upon reaching, will make everything right in our world. “Someday I’ll…(fill in the blank!)” Someday I’ll…lose weight. Someday I’ll…work less and enjoy life more. Someday I’ll…take that trip. And then, I’ll be happy/fulfilled/successful…Lots of amazing dreams are firmly parked somewhere on Someday Isle!

Like many of you, I have some dreams that were out there at Someday Isle for years or even decades, like writing a book and building a public speaking business. After I left my last job, I took some time to carefully consider my next role. The safe, stable option was to get another corporate job. But it was not my heart’s desire. Through a lot of reflection, prayer, and support from my amazing husband, I realized that if I didn’t go for what I really wanted, I might not ever do it. So, I turned my back on the safe route and jumped in with both feet to retrieve those career dreams from Someday Isle. It has been hard, unpredictable, and a bit overwhelming at times. But I have no regrets!

What goals and dreams have you parked at Someday Isle? Maybe it’s a personal goal, like running a marathon/half marathon/5K, getting more physically fit, learning a new hobby, volunteering, or losing weight. Maybe it’s a job change, an educational pursuit, or learning a new skill.

Consider this:

  • What would you like to do someday?
  • What small steps might you take to ensure your Someday Isle dreams move toward reality, even if they might take years to accomplish?
  • What would you choose to do if you knew you might not have an infinite number of tomorrows left to do it?

It is great to have dreams, and it’s fine to park them temporarily. Just don’t forget to create a plan to pursue those faraway dreams so they don’t always outdistance you!
