Tomb of the First King of Caracol Discovered by UH Architect

University of Houston archaeologists Arlen and Diane Chase have uncovered the tomb of Te K’ab Chaak, the dynastic founder and first ruler of Caracol, Belize, who reigned c. 331–349  AD, marking the first identifiable royal burial at the site in over 40 years of excavation. The richly furnished tomb, found in the Northeast Acropolis, contained jadeite jewelry and a mosaic death mask, shedding new light on early Maya ties and diplomatic exchanges with central Mexico centuries before the widely studied “entrada” of 378  AD.
