Personal Journey
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced on your path to leadership, and how did you overcome them?
An early challenge for me was to learn to invest in myself. As women, it can be our nature to focus on developing others over bettering ourselves. I had to make a conscious decision to prioritize my personal development plan and made a commitment to stick with it. That meant finding an executive coach and being willing to make meaningful adjustments, voicing my needs to others around me, and making sure I am continuously putting the tools in my toolbox to maintain my voice and lead with confidence.
Advice for the Next Generation
Are there any specific skills or qualities you believe are essential for future leaders?
Good leaders must be good communicators. Knowledge is one thing, but you need to effectively communicate it to your audience. Leadership-style communicating is not just speaking and directing. It also requires truly listening and engaging to find ways to add value and direction.
Importance of Giving Back
Why do you believe it is important to give back through organizations like the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce?
I subscribe to the adage “to whom much is given, much is expected.” True leaders have a responsibility to develop and empower others. By instilling little pieces of yourself and your life lessons into other women, you are building a long-term legacy of success and a culture of helping people.
Additional Insights
How do you stay motivated and continue to grow professionally?
While I love my job, I am always looking for the next opportunity or challenge. I never see a place as my last stop. That mentality drives me and keeps me sharp. Taking care of myself is also very important. Wellness, exercise, and creating space for rest can’t fall by the wayside for someone to put their best foot forward and make the world a better place.
