Two of the girls were chosen to ask NASA Astronaut Megan McArthur questions and they spoke very well.

Kaitlyn Youngblood asked: “Do you and your husband talk to your son about the dangers of your jobs? If so, how does he feel about it?”

Sukainah Majid asked, “ What are some things you did while training as an astronaut?”

Kaitlyn was not shy at all and asked for an individual picture. Of course, Megan said, “yes!”

Space Center Houston celebrated Dr. Sally K. Ride, the first American woman to travel to outer space. Guests were able to explore a full day of activities celebrating the 40th anniversary of one exciting episode of Dr. Sally K. Ride’s extraordinary life—STS-7, the historic mission when she became the first American woman in space. We also celebrated the women and gender-expansive people who came before her and those who followed in her footsteps.

Special guest included featured speaker NASA Astronaut Megan McArthur, NASA Astronaut Colonel Ken Cameron as well as Jennifer Ross Nazzal who is a NASA Human Spaceflight Historian. In addition to the speakers, Space Center Houston had special pop-up labs throughout the museum for guests of all ages to participate in. They included:

  • The EarthKam Lab where you could examine images of earth using the EarthKam, which is a program originally initiated by Dr. Sally Ride, to determine where in the world the image was taken.
  • A station for Women of NASA Matching Game where we highlighted several other women of NASA including Sally Ride.
  • The Shuttle Glider Lab where guests created their own shuttle glider model and discovered what Dr. Sally Ride experienced when flying on both space shuttle missions.
  • Read aloud story corner where guest could blast off to space with Snoopy, Sally and Charlie Brown in a special peanuts book entitled “Space Traveler Sally Brown.”

Again, thanks you and I look forward to seeing the STEAM Town USA girls participate in other Space Center Houston events in the future!
